Bacanika Magazine is a cool, creative and fabulous printed magazine for young people and adults. They made a jump to the digital media, so they comissioned me for to make a cover of a symbolic "bye to the paper, hello to the web".

La revista Bacánika es una revista colombiana llena de creatividad, diseño y buenos textos, dirigido a jóvenes y adultos, en este momento cambian su plataforma al medio digital, así que me contactaron para hacer la portada despidiendo simbólicamente al papel, y entrando en la red (internet).

Esta fue la portada final. Un proceso muy interesante y un excelente equipo de trabajo.

In past days the colombian music Magazine "Shock", comissioned me along with other talented artists for to modify and to play with the new cover of his next issue, as a promotion for an Artists open contest. The final idea is to make an exhibition around the country showing the best covers. Here is my version.

This past monday the Count Faber-Castell was interviewed on a colombian tv show, they needed images showing the use of pencils, so I was asked to draw something for that.

Una experiencia muy bonita

Es impresionante la logística que lleva un festival de estos, programación simultánea, proyecciones en varios teatros y eventos paralelos. Wow!

Bueno, el día de mi proyección fue muy chévere, obviamente con mucha espectativa pero también muy contento por poder hacer difusión de mi trabajo. Durante 3 días pudimos ver todos los trabajos participantes, hechos por nuevos creadores, donde estaba participando. Me sorprendió mucho ver las propuestas tan diferentes de todos, en cuanto a estilo, temática abordada y narración.

El centro histórico fue el lugar donde se desarrollaron la mayoría de las actividades, bellísima arquitectura y con mucha gente transitando por todos lados!

El último día pude asisitr a un conversatorio que hizo el Festival con Fernando Trueba sobre Cine y Música, a propósito de la película Chico y Rita, que cerraba esa noche el Festival. Me interesaba mucho pues es el tema que estoy abordando en mi obra como animador :)

Realmente, una experiencia muy bonita!

I would like to make a special post remembering the memory of Nelson Ramírez, one of the fathers of the animation in Colombia, who died last weekend. Nelson was a visionary entrepreneur who with his cartoon studio created in the early 70's managed to produce with a talented team of animators over 600 animated commercials that still persist in the collective memory of the Colombians. Always enjoyed more cell traditional animation than computers because according to him the computers did not give the quality that could give the human hand. The following tv spots are very memorable works of their work and my favorites, enjoy it!

Quisiera hacer un post especial recordando la memoria de uno de los padres de la animación en Colombia, el maestro Nelson Ramírez, quién falleció el pasado fin de semana.

Nelson fue un empresario visionario quien con su estudio de dibujos animados creado a principios de los 70's logró producir junto a un talentoso equipo de animadores más de 600 comerciales animados que aún perduran en la memoria colectiva de los colombianos. Siempre disfrutó más la técnica tradicional del acetato que los computadores pues según él no daban la calidad que podía dar la mano humana. Las siguientes imágenes son obras muy recordadas de su trabajo y mis favoritas :)

Bueno, voy a aprovechar este post para contarles de mi proyecto para el final del diplomado, el cual ya comencé a trabajar. Es lo que he estado haciendo estos días y unas semanas que vienen mientras lo desarrollo en el tiempo libre que me queda del trabajo, mientras tanto en el blog seguiré colocando más ejercicios que hice.
Como expectativa de mi proyecto, les puedo decir que tendrá ilustración, música coral, papel cortado, y mi alma puesta en él.

Tuve la oportunidad de asistir y me encantó. Hay trabajos impresionantes tanto en concepto como en desarrollo gráfico, además, es parte de nuestra historia :) Obras de Henry Laverde, Luis María Rincón, Ricardo Rendón, Pepe Gómez, Osuna y otros fabulosos artistas.

Parte de mi ocupación estas últimas semanas fue también preparando un portafolio y reel para una beca de diplomado que ofreció el Ministerio de Cultura, muy feliz porque la obtuve! así que desde hace unos pocos días estoy de nuevo en el trote de trabajo y estudio, vale la pena definitivamente! y el tema del diplomado ¡wow! es de animación experimental ^_^

And I start with a post about my work and the art & craft of work with paper.
Thank you so much to all people that consider my work as an inspiration, I feel so honored.
Some people asking me about the process of my work and tips to begin, hey Arthur, enjoy this post!
I have always been fascinated by the paper as the medium itself to create things. I feel a passion when I cut and I try to make a connection with the paper and what I want to express.
I entered in this art with experimentation and now I know that making is the only way to learn and to achieve.

The tools I use - You can view it here. My WIP - Process of my work can be seen here. You can also see my "making of” label in this blog. What can you make to begin:* Go to the paper store and know ther different kind of papers, textures and thickness.
* You can cut with scissors or x-acto, personally I prefer work with x-acto knife, this is more comfortable to me, you can make with torn paper as well :)
* You can work big and work small to stablish what works better for you.
* When I work with paper sculpture I use White Glue or Glue Stick for glue the parts, using toothpicks for apply carefully. Also I use Foamy between pieces if I want to create volume.
Recomended books :
well, there are so many books in the market. You can search for different labels such as papercut, paper cutting, kirigami, origami, silhouettes, cutouts, scherenschnitte, paper sculpture, papel picado, recortes de papel. Personally, I like so much the books of Paul Jackson. Easy step to step guide and so funny exercises for to begin.
Apart from the technique, it’s so important to read about you like: architecture, anatomy, cartoon, history, etc. It will make a strong ground for your pieces.

Some advices I learned for my own work:* Try to put always a concept behind the artwork, express yourself.
* Read about the image, art movements, composition, colour,and see all the wonderful art and artist worldwide
* Have fun, enjoy it!

Hola a todos! De nuevo y con más posts ^_^

Comienzo con uno acerca de mi trabajo y el arte de trabajar con papel, aprovechando que algunos lectores me han preguntado acerca de mi proceso y sobre recomendaciones y tips para comenzar. Muchas gracias a todas las personas que consideran mi trabajo como inspiración, me siento muy feliz y me motiva a seguir creando.

Siempre me he sentido fascinado con el papel como medio mismo para crear obras, siento una gran energía al estar trabajando, logrando una conexión con el papel y con lo que quiero expresar. Comencé probando y experimentando y ahora sé que la única forma de seguir aprendiendo día a día está en el hacer.

Materiales que utilizo - Puedes verlo haciendo click acá. Proceso de una ilustración - Un ejemplo puede ser visto aquí. O también puedes visitar mis enlaces de "Proceso/making of” en este mismo blogPara comenzar:* Visita una papelería y conoce los diferentes tipos de papel, texturas y grosores.
* Puedes cortar con tijeras o bisturí de manualidades (X-acto), personalmente me siento más cómodo trabajando con el x-acto. También puedes trabajar rasgando el papel con tus manos :)
* Prueba trabajando en grande y en pequeño para definir en cual trabajas mejor.
* Cuando trabajo con escultura en papel uso pegante en barra, engrudo o pegante blanco (Colbón) aplicado con palillos para unir las partes. De vez en cuando uso también el Foamy cuando quiero crear un poco de volumen.
Lecturas recomendadas:
Existen muchos libros en el mercado. Puedes buscar por papercut, paper cutting, kirigami, origami, silhouettes, cutouts, scherenschnitte, paper sculpture, papel picado o recortes de papel. Personalmente, me gustan mucho los libros de Paul Jackson. Una fácil guía paso a paso y ejercicios divertidos para los que comienzan.
Aparte de la técnica, es muy importante leer también acerca de los temas que te apasionen: arquitectura, anatomía, caricaturas, historia, etc. Esto hará que tus trabajos tengan una base sólida.

Algunos consejos que he aprendido de mi trabajo:* Trata de manejar un concepto en todas tus obras, exprésate libremente.
* Lee acerca de la imagen, vanguardias y tendencias del arte, composición y color.
* Pásala rico, diviértete!

Hola! volviendo de vacaciones! Viajamos con mi novia a la ciudad donde ella nació, Medellín. Allí la pasamos muy rico caminando, conociendo y descansando. Lo que más disfruté fueron los alumbrados que hacen a lo largo de la avenida del río, en estas fechas.

Hi and happy new year to you! My girlfriend and I were traveling on Medellín, the place where she was born. I enjoyed so much this place! One of the things I loved most was the "alumbrados" (lights), a traditional event in this city in December and January. I want to share some photos of this beautiful fiesta.

Y esta ilustración es una fachada realizada en el barrio Pilarica, una de tantas tardes de descanso. Bueno, de nuevo al ritmo! :)

And this is a paper cut arwork that I made an evening, in the "Pilarica" neighborhood. These were a wonderful days I enjoyed. And now...back to the work! :)

Se acabó el taller con Santiago del que les comenté hace un par de semanas, con mucha nostalgia y bueno, feliz con lo que aprendí y con mil historias por contar, acá estoy en la presentación final contando mis cuentos de "historias de cabeza" e "historias de pie", si finalmente se graban los cuentos presentados se los estaré mostrando más adelante.
Al final, Santiago rifó uno de sus cuentos y yo me lo gané : )

The workshop I took has ended and I'm nostalgic but so happy with all the experiences and tales developed in it. Here I'm telling my stories for the final presentation. I hope to upload a video of these stories soon. Oh , and the teacher made a "number raffle"(-?-I don't know if this is the word in english) of one of his books, and I was the winner! :)

TYE - Where the wild things are

A few weeks ago Cory Godbey created a site for a tribute to the classic book "Where the wild things are" for a personal admiration to the book and his author,Maurice Sendak. I LOVE this book, it had great impact in my childhood and become to an illustrator.Thanks to God and Cory, I had the opportunity to participate in this tribute! to my surprise it ended up being a great virtual birthday card for Mr. Sendak this past June 10!!! The site is full of fantastic pieces done by awesome artists and you can see them in TERRIBLEYELLOWEYES. Today I make an special post with the illo and the making process. Enjoy! PS. Oh, in the photos you see me working, is my girlfriend who is behind the camera : )

75 Years! I remember 50 anniversary in 1984, in my 7 birthday... My father rented a videotape of Donald with interviews, shorts, and a mixture of animation and real image. I remember to sing the opening song without understanding anything of what he said (and I said) in english he he!
One of my fondest memories and a huge influence in my career without even suspecting.

75 Años! Recuerdo cuando cumplió 50 en 1984, yo tenía 7 años...y mi padre me alquiló un video en Betamax con mezcla de imagen real y animación. Este mes comencé a tomar un taller con Santiago y está muy chévere, acá está mi primera historia.

- El dadofante es un animal muy interesante...cada vez que ve caminando a una jiraficha, da vueltas en el suelo hasta quedar en alguna posición y esperar que su amiga avance...
- The dicelephant is a very interesting animal: Every time he see walking a giraffe, he turns on the floor until to stay in a random position and wait his friend advance...
Lo que más disfruta, es sentarse a leer las reglas del juego de la vida.
What he enjoys most is to sit down and read the game rules of...life.

Esta ilustración esta basada en un sueño que tuve alguna vez

eran los días que estaba terminando mi trabajo de grado en la Universidad, y como me la pasaba todo el día recortando papel para mi proyecto, una de esas noches tuve un sueño en el que luego de tanto trabajo me iba de vacaciones por fin a descansar a Cartagena y al llegar al mar todo era de papel...fue terrible!

entraba y el agua no me mojaba! era papel y más papel ja ja..que loca que es la mente.

Precisamente ayer vi la película "La ciencia de los sueños" y volví a recordarlo :)

Yesterday I saw the movie "The science of sleep" and it reminded me the dream :)
